Bayside Hypnotherapy, Counselling & Psychotherapy In Brighton Melbourne Makes Life Changes Easier

In Demand Hypnotherapist, Counsellor & Psychotherapist In Brighton Answers Frequently Asked Questions:

"How Long Will It Take?"

Naturally, the more energy you put in, the more benefit you can expect to get. Clinical hypnotherapy and counselling can facilitate substantial changes to problematic thoughts, feelings, behaviours and life experiences. Since commencing practice in 1996 I have consistently observed that the people who experience most benefit are those who take responsibility for their own change and who are adequately committed to a course of therapy. Until a full exploration of the presenting problem is complete, it is difficult for either of us to estimate how long a course of therapy will need to run. To best ensure positive changes are achieved and sustained in the long term, a realistic course of therapy needs to be completed.

I generally advocate healthy skepticism concerning quick fix claims. Adequate time to develop a helpful counselling relationship that puts you back in control of whatever brings you to see me in the first place is important. This usually includes addressing deeper levels of the mind than can sometimes be worked through in a few sessions. Sometimes I just do counselling and psychotherapy. Hypnotherapy may also be indicated and integrally included along the way to help accelerate your progress, if we both consider appropriate.

First, a Warning about quick fixes and so called guarantees: Don't be deceived by them! Although most people who see me report substantial improvements in their lives, I am mindful of an unfortunate symptom of our materialistic, consumer driven society; the false belief that some kind of short term gratification (be it brief therapy, a new house, a new car, a new lover etc) will fulfill our need for happiness and security. This is a lie that most advertising promises. As for guarantees, they also may contribute to this false belief by stripping people of their own sense of responsibility for change.

Another note about therapy: it is a relational process, rather than a treatment like medicine. In medicine there are statistics to predict, how long a drug may take to work for example. Therapy is a do with not a do to treatment.

My answer isn't black and white, as every person is different, has different goals, and different histories.  For example, fear reduction in a person with a 20 year history of anxiety and phobias may take longer than say, a person with an occasional fear of flying. In either case, the individuals may have a goal to manage their anxieties, or perhaps more specifically gain confidence and develop deeper awareness and insight into their problems and opportunities.

"What can I expect in our sessions together?"

Depending on what we think is appropriate for you, for developing new perspectives in problem and opportunity situations in your life, a variety of tools will be available. I will listen carefully, suspending judgment, in order to understand you best. Things we do include some of or a combination of counselling, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, dream analysis and NLP.

"Who Shouldn't Make An Appointment For Psychotherapy Or Hypnotherapy?"

People wanting someone or something outside of themselves to "fix" them. People with psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar, severe depression, etc, may benefit more from different psychological approaches.

"I'm Thinking Of Trying Hypnotherapy, Does It Really Work?"

Allow me to clear up the confusion evident from the assumption from this question. Fact: Hypnosis is not an "IT"! Hypnosis is not a thing, like some piece of clothing, object or food to "try". Hypnosis is a natural process of communicating with deeper levels of ourselves. Asking if "it" works is like asking if breathing works, or communication works, or relationship works. We all breathe, communicate and self-hypnotize ourselves naturally all the time, sometimes symptomatically, sometimes therapeutically, often unconsciously. When you can master your naturally occurring hypnotic processes deliberately, in your own favour, then you can start to experience real results, compared with leaving them to chance. Your mindful recognition of hypnotherapy being a process by which you actively participate in together with a skilled therapist will set you in good stead for achieving your outcomes.

Every one of us has been hypnotized already by those in authority over us, perhaps within family structures, communities, religions etc. Hypnotherapy can help to change our conditioning and give more self control over our minds. Finding a hypnotherapist who you trust, is well qualified and experienced, is just so important ... so that you can both participate in your personal healing process. Everyone responds differently and your beliefs in the process influence how much value you gain, which  doesn't mean that healthy skepticism isn't encouraged. To the contrary. But unsubstantiated doubt and fear sometimes need to be worked through first in order to get the most from hypnotherapy and counselling.

"What Is Hypnotherapy?"

A safe process of communication that utilizes naturally occurring "trance" states for the purpose of influencing some kind of change in a helpful way. Hypnotherapy can give you the tools to manage how you feel about yourself and others, so that you’ll have more choices when you are in difficult situations.

"What Is Trance?"

A natural psycho-physiological state that occurs whenever identity is de-stabilized. Trance results from positive and negative life events, such as shock, surprise, birth, marriage, graduation, divorce, selling house, illness, etc. Hypnosis is not trance. Hypnosis is a safe way to induce or manage a trance in order to facilitate some change.

"What is hypnotherapy not?"

A passive process. A fixed state. An object. Sleep. Mind control. The work of the Devil. Artificial. Dangerous. Religious. An opportunity to hand your responsibility over to someone else, like parking your car in the garage for a service and picking it up when it’s repaired.

"Can I be hypnotized?"

If you can concentrate, co-operate, and breathe – YES! A skilled therapist qualified and registered with a professional association such as the AHA, who you trust, will be able to help make a large difference for you.

"But I was told I couldn’t be hypnotized and since then I have not relaxed properly when seeing hypnotists."

Sounds like you were hypnotized into believing that you could not be hypnotized, and have lived out that hypnotic suggestion, until now.

There are more useful possibilities.

"Is Hypnosis safe?"

Yes, since it's natural like day-dreaming. It can be very therapeutic, too. However if you suffer from Epilepsy or psychiatric conditions, consult your medical professional before proceeding.

"Will I lose control?"

No, however learning to trust yourself in order to let go is helpful. You will likely experience greater self-control. Hypnotherapy leads to a naturally altered state of consciousness, not unconsciousness! That means that you will be more awake, because your senses become heightened. YOU are always in complete control. You cannot and will not be made to say or do anything against your will. Hypnosis will give you some very powerful tools, which under guidance from a trained hypnotherapist can help you to overcome your difficulties and enjoy life now.

"Will I have to reveal my deep dark secrets while under hypnosis?"

No. You can withhold anything you wish both in trance and out of trance. In fact, your hypnotherapist being skilled may not need to know all of the details of your personal experience.

"Is Hypnotherapy a quick fix ,that’s short lived?"

Effective hypnotherapy is not a quick fix. The process can accelerate changes in therapy however claims of one size fits all 'one hit wonders' can be unrealistic and worse, deny important levels of depth that may otherwise provide useful insights for you. It is useful to combine hypnotherapy with counselling to integrate changes at conscious and unconscious levels. Inquire within for more details. There are two main general schools of thought in hypnosis, traditional and permissive (Ericksonian). If all your practitioner does is use traditional hypnosis, which means giving you new positive suggestions, this can sometimes be short lived. But when hypnotherapy is used effectively, from a practitioner who does not merely add artificial suggestions, instead working with what you have in your consciousness in a helpful way, the changes you choose to make will last.

"What does this cost?"

Really, mindfully consider the short and long term costs for you financially, emotionally, mentally and socially in putting off gaining calmness and self-control. Clearly, the amount of sessions required varies between individuals but if you are committed to achieving your outcomes hypnotherapy will cost you far less that not doing something and "putting up with it" would .. you with me? Now the amount payable depends on the length of sessions.

"When Will I Notice Changes?"

Like fingerprints, every person is different. Most people find themselves feeling peaceful and sometimes different after only one session. Some people take several sessions to create powerful and lasting changes. Again, your belief in the process impacts this. Without skimping on quality, my goal is to help you as effectively possible, which usually combines counselling and hypnotherapy. I want you to reconnect with your inner-self and enjoy a genuine sense of confidence that surpasses any kind of struggle that you may have.

"Do you do regression?"

I can. But it isn’t always necessary. Working with the past is not always helpful either. But that all depends on you, your goals and beliefs. My role is not to tell you what to believe, it is always to work with you to get you to where you want to be as quickly and easily as possible.

"Can Hypnosis Help Heal Relationships?"

Yes, coupled with what I believe to be the most effective system available today for relationships:  Imago.

Some hypnotherapists prefer one particular approach over another. I have been doing Clinical Hypnotherapy since 1996, and will work with your deeper wants and needs rather than merely expecting you to conform to a set procedure or script. No two sessions are ever the same.

I am trained in both traditional and permissive methods of hypnosis, which means that you will have a larger range of tools available to help get what you want.  I combine hypnotherapy with counselling and psychotherapy.

I am qualified as a master practitioner of NLP, clinical and Ericksonian hypnotherapy and psychotherapy. I am a clinical member of Australian Hypnotherapists Association (AHA) and treat patients in my Brighton Hypnotherapy clinic.

If you are not from the Bayside Melbourne area, I should be able to recommend someone else for hypnosis who is more local for you to connect with.

If not now, when? If not you, who?

We invite you to discover for yourself why so many people are coming to our Hypnotherapy Bayside Clinic. Whilst our centre is conveniently located in Bay St Brighton, we treat patients who come from surrounding suburbs of Melbourne too, such as Brighton East, Hampton, St Kilda, Elwood, Caulfield, Balaclava, McKinnon, Carnegie, Bentleigh and more.
