Tendon Injuries

Tendon injuries can be painful and debilitating. They usually occur as the result of a specific incident, such as straining a tendon while running or from overuse, such as excessive typing and computer work. Tendon problems can also be degenerative - as the body ages, the blood flow to tendons decreases making them more susceptible to innocuous injury and prolonging recovery time. Treatment often involves a combination of hands on intervention, such as soft tissue and tendon friction massage to relieve stress on the tendon and break down adhesions that are impairing tendon activity and strength.

Tendon injuries are often associated with inflammation and measures to address this include ultrasound, ice, anti-inflammatories and rest. As the inflammation settles, a graded exercise program to improve tendon strength is usually introduced to reduce the chances of later injury.
